How "Max" Looks Today - PICTURES FROM THE INSIDE

THE PLANNING PHASE

It took us several months to decide how we are going to travel. In the beginning, we planned to buy an old fire truck, restore it and build a box on it. However, as
  • the  fuel consumption of these trucks is very high (30 to 35 liter /100 km),
  • we don't have a drivers license for big trucks and
  • the driving speed is comparably low,
we continued our search for an adequate home. The main criteria were:
  • Marian will use the vehicle for his outdoor retreats, which mark the starting point of his 6 month coaching program. Therefore, the car needs to have at least two separate beds that fit adults.
  • Descent offroad capabilities to allow us travelling through Iceland
  • Fuel consumption way below 20l/100km
  • Ability to carry a box about 4.5 to 5 meters
  • Fitting our budget
In April 2018, we decided that an IVECO Daily 4x4 will fit the best, although the 4.5 meters of the box can only be realized with an alcove. In June 2018, we bought an IVECO 55S17WD from a car dealer in Germany.
These are the final sketches after which we built our mobile home:

Technical Data Chassis

  • Specification: IVECO DAILY 4x4 55S17WD
  • 3,0 HPT Common-Rail-Diesel (Euro 5), 170 hp, 400 Nm
  • Permanent 4-wheel-drive, 6-Gear-Overdrive-Transmission, 3 differential locks
  • 255/100 R 16 offroad tires
  • Gross vehicle weight: 5,5 t

Description Frame and Cabin

  • The underride guard has been extended to 51 cm. With this extension, we can use the maximum possible length. It allows a rear overhang of two meters (< 60% of the wheelbase) and meets the regulatory framework in Europe.
  • The intermediate frame, which allows a certain torsion of the vehicle without influencing the cabin, has been fixed at the end and spring loaded at the front of the original frame. If you want to know the maths behind the definition of the springs and the distance between the alcove and the cab, you are welcome to contact us.
  • The cabin has a size of 3.1 to 2.34 meters. The alcove has a size of 1.7 to 2.34 meters, which gives the cabin an overall length of 4.8 meters and the car a length of 6.5 meters. The overall hight is 3.55 meters, which is - as well as the width - close to the maximum for traveling decent off-road roads.
  • The cabin is built out of GRP. Each wall is 4.5 cm thick and has a special honeycomb structure that protects the foam behind the GRP.
